No it's not a misprint and it's not a scam. We offer a variety of free and discounted lessons to help promote and sustain the sport, encourage student development, and support the community and youth.
General Public
Not sure what it's all about? Whether the venue, atmosphere, or lesson format will suit you? Prospective students are welcome to come and watch any lesson, ask questions about how we run the class, and get a general 'feel' for what we do. However, after the first such lesson, presence in the class is considered participation and payment will be requested.
There are a variety of ways in which you can get lessons FREE...
4Beat Blues - Mondays 6-7pm @ The Mustang Bar: These introductory lessons run each week and follow a 3wk 'micro-course' (Circles, Lines, Spins) that will give you the core dance skills for all of the different styles we teach. . 4Beat Blues is a 'base' dance style that is perfect for new dancers as it may be readily developed into Rock 'n' Roll (6Beats) or Swing (8beats), while the arm-work is very useful for Rockabilly! Using an optional rotation format to help you meet other new dancers, each lesson is independent and very suitable for beginners. Start any week and keep coming as long as you like to get the fundamentals of Retro Dance!!!
Ask A Cool Cat:Have you seen somebody out dancing who is wearing a Cool Cat's shirt? There is a good chance that they are one of our promotional members with information on our classes - and if you've never learnt from us before they may have a card that entitles you to your first lesson* FREE. (*Wk 1: Structured Course)
Bonus General Class: For new students attending with a partner and participating in a rotational Structured Course, the General Class on the same night may be taken FREE. This is to provide new students with an introduction to the General Class format and opportunity to consolidate course content.
Community & Youth
Dancing is a great sport and social activity that a lot of people are missing out on! Because dancing is what we do Cool Cats aims to support the community, particularly youth and mental health programs, by offering FREE lessons. To support dance development and encourage further community awareness of Retro Dance, we also offer FREE lessons to youth/student dance or theatre groups.
Riverview Church: For attendees of Riverview Church tickets are available from the Bookstore for your FREE introductory 6wk Structured Course. Please contact us to find out which course may best suit you.
GROW & Youth Focus: Cool Cats provides tickets for an introductory 6wk Structured Course for use at the discretion of these community partners (they may be sold for fund-raising, used in promotion, or given away). If you are a member of these organisations, please ask your representative about these tickets. Please note that due to changes in staffing positions, the relevant officer may not be aware of our offer. In such circumstances, please give us a call!
Youth/Student Groups: If you represent a youth/student organisation, particularly if you are involved with dance or theatre, please contact us about FREE introductory courses and/or workshops for your members. Alternatively, if you are a member of such a group, provide proof of your current membership for a FREE introductory course.
Members Lessons: At the start and finish of the year there are a number of weeks during which venues tend to be inconsistently available (due to functions, holidays, repairs, etc.). Consequently, it is difficult to maintain our standard course format and lesson schedule. Rather, a limited number of General Classes are held that are available to Cool Cats members only. These lessons are FREE for administrative and promotional members.
Lesson & Teaching Assistants: Lesson assistants, who serve (by invitation) as additional Leads and/or Follows in the Structured Courses, participate in the class for FREE. Teaching Assistants, who (with suitable training and guidance) provide direct student input during lessons, are eligible and strongly encouraged to participate (with partner) in all Short Courses and General Classes FREE.
